Draft Four Humbled Me

A late-night note from September 2025, when two good lines could send me back through three other chapters.

From the September 2025 drafting journal, during the fourth version of the manuscript.

It’s one of those nights where the city in my head is louder than the real one. I’ve been at the desk since 5 a.m. and I still can’t stop. At this point I feel like a method actor who forgot to leave the stage, inside everyone’s skull at once. I jump from scene to scene, add two perfect lines, then realize those two lines ripple through three other chapters, so I sprint back and stitch those too. Rinse, repeat. (Yes, I am basically my main character: high‑energy brain, hyperfocus, and ten tabs open in my head at all times. Sin never names it; neither do I here. But… yeah.)

I’m in the phase where “done” means “make every chapter sing at the same volume.” I’m on version four, and it’s wild looking back at draft one and thinking, “I thought that was brilliant?” Reader, it was not. It’s staggering (and kind of wonderful) how much a story can evolve when you keep sharpening it.

Hey, this part is for my fellow writers: do you remember the first time you put words on paper and felt like you’d cracked the code, and then draft four humbled you into a better version of yourself? Because same. Every revision upgrades not just the book, but the writer.

What I need from readers: gut-level reactions. “This confused me.” “This made me scream.” Pacing flags. Places where the language sings or trips. Clarity and feelings are gold.
