From the February 2026 editing journal, partway through a shared read-aloud pass.
A while back I posted that we were “close.” I genuinely thought we were. Then we started a new editing process that changed everything. My wife jumped in, and we’ve been reading the book out loud to each other as we edit. It’s been a game-changer.
When you hear the story out loud, you catch what your brain skips on the page. If something isn’t clear, it shows up immediately. If a scene drags, you feel it. If a moment hits, you know it. That’s what we’ve been doing, line by line, chapter by chapter.
We’re about halfway through this read-aloud pass now, and we’re picking up speed. The book is tighter, clearer, and stronger than it’s ever been. We’ve cut a ton of unnecessary words. The action reads fast. The tension is sharp. The intimacy is hot (this is an adult book, 18+). Having a second author voice in the room has made the whole thing immeasurably better.
Also, writing a book is a lot harder than people think. In the beginning, everything feels perfect because I know the whole story in my head. But the page has to do the work for the reader. This pass is us making sure it does.
If you’ve been following along here, thank you. Seriously. Your patience and support mean more than I can say.
Keep exploring the world.
